Naturopathy is a holistic practice that addresses the whole person—physical, mental, spiritual, and energetic. I love the investigation piece of my work and trying to understand the complexity of someone, not just their physical symptoms and the pathways that may have led to dis-ease, but also the subconscious narratives keeping them sick and stuck.
As I tell both my Naturopath and ConTact C.A.R.E clients:
Nothing happens in isolation. You cannot separate the mind from the body.
Before we dive in, I encourage you to read this with an open mind. While I will forever be a science nerd and will reference where appropriate, space also needs to be given to explore the more intuitive, energetic side of healing. My main goal is to treat the whole person, which involves using tools that some people may call 'woo woo' ;)
Over the past year, I have been doing deep, internal work to examine the parts of myself that have been resisting change, uncovering and overcoming my limiting beliefs, and changing some deeply engrained habits with my health and business. This personal exploration isn’t just for me; of course I want to be the best version of myself and keep evolving, but it is essential to providing the best service for my clients.
Before we can teach and heal others, we must first teach and heal ourselves, right?
Most practitioners in the health space, whether they be physiotherapists, naturopaths, therapists, or chiropractors—have walked through their own challenges before emerging to help others navigate theirs. Through my journey, I’ve realized that no matter how well you eat, move, or sleep, if your subconscious mind and energetic field are out of balance, you will likely find yourself stuck in cycles of unhelpful behaviors.
How your Subconscious affects Habit Change and Health
In my practice, I frequently see individuals who intellectually understand what they should be doing for their health but struggle to take action. They know how to nourish their bodies, move, and rest, yet they find themselves unable to perform the action.
They cannot get out the door. They cannot open up their laptop and start their to-do list. They can’t stop at one slice, or a donut, a one square of chocolate.. Can you relate?
From the outside, someone may say this person is lazy or comment that their ‘why’ just isn’t strong enough. But I beg to differ. I have treated some incredibly smart and purpose-driven individuals that have their sh*t together.
So what's happening here?

The Power of the Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind is our internal database, storing and retrieving information based on past experiences. From birth to around age seven, our brains operate primarily in theta and alpha wavelengths—similar to states experienced in meditation or hypnosis (1). During this time, we absorb behaviors, responses, and beliefs from our surroundings, forming the foundation of our subconscious patterns.
By the time we reach adulthood, many of our thoughts and behaviors are governed by the subconscious, even when they are no longer beneficial for our health and wellbeing. The subconscious mind equates familiarity with safety. The moment you decide to make a different choice, you are going to feel uncomfortable! Your brain has gone from the known action or way of thinking (familiar = safety) to an unknown action or way of thinking [unfamiliar = unsafe] (2). This is what makes change so hard and why you may feel your mind 'bargaining' with you when trying to choose a different route.
Your brain will fight tooth and claw to move your body back into the familiar, known territory, even if the behaviour or reaction is no longer benefiting you.
How the Subconscious directly impacts habit change
Automatic Responses – As you have learned, your thoughts, actions, and behaviour are ingrained from early childhood. Whether it’s the habit of reaching for sugar during stress or reacting with anger instantly during conflict, these patterns are deeply wired into the basal ganglia to free up the conscious mind for decision-making. This is when the habit or reaction feels like it is ‘second nature’, and like you physically can't stop yourself doing it.
Beliefs and Conditioning – Subconscious limiting beliefs (e.g., “I’m not good enough” or “Change is impossible for me”) create mental blocks that sabotage efforts toward growth. Your brain will create self-sabotaging habits to reconfirm these beliefs over and over and over again. So, how are you speaking to yourself when no one else is around? Do you truly believe in your ability to change? Or is there a quiet (or loud) voice telling you that you can’t?
Emotional Triggers – Habits are often tied to unresolved emotions. For example, eating junk food may be a way to self-soothe stress, or smoking may ease social anxiety. Until we address the root emotional cause, behavioral change remains difficult. The emotional intensity of the past experience matters, the stronger the emotion, the faster the subconscious will hold onto it.
Repetition and Consistency – To change a habit, we must rewire the subconscious through repetition. It takes time, patience, and self-compassion to integrate new patterns until they become second nature. It can be helpful to create an identity-based habit change (e.g., I am a person that prioritizes daily movement) is more effective than just focusing on the action (I want to start exercising every day).
How I Support Clients within the Subconscious Realm
During initial consultations, I explore a client’s early experiences to identify limiting beliefs that may be hindering progress - do they believe they are capable of change? Do they identify as being a 'sick' person? Do they think being healthy is hard? Do they believe that they deserve to be healthy, happy, and free? From there, I incorporate various techniques tailored to their needs. This could look like:
1. Healy: Energetic Frequency Healing
Healy is a small, but mighty bioenergetic device that uses individualized microcurrent frequencies to harmonize the body’s energetic field (the ultimate vibes machine). It scans the user’s energy and detects limiting beliefs or imbalances within their energetic field, then transmits frequencies based on what the individual needs most. There are hundreds of programs developed to support the nervous system, organ and meridian functioning, stress, chronic pain, and emotional well-being.
What I love most about Healy is its ability to restore sovereignty in healing. In a world where we don't get much say in our external systems (schooling, government policies, even health care), this device takes health into your own hands - no more relying on the system (can I get a f**k yeah!). Healy is your naturopath, life coach, and energy healer all in one, and can support your whole family’s (including pets) energetic healing.

2. Meditation & Yoga
Both meditation and yoga foster self-awareness, helping individuals observe subconscious thought patterns without judgment. Yoga, in particular, deepens the mind-body connection, allowing individuals to release stored emotions and reconnect with their physical vessel (3).
3. Somatic Practices
Somatic practices involve movement, breathwork, and meditation to help individuals process emotions that may be stored in the fascia. These techniques are beautiful for those who feel they have intellectually processed their experiences, but still feel physical tension, emotional resistance, and a lack of safety in their physical body. Within your treatment plan, you may receive recorded videos or audio sessions to help process stored anger, rage, anxiety, or grief.
4. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Tapping
EFT combines acupressure with cognitive therapy. By tapping on specific meridian points while focusing on a particular issue, individuals can release stuck energy and shift emotional blockages. This practice helps calm the nervous system and reprogram subconscious responses (4).
The Future of Healing
I firmly believe that the future of healing lies in subconscious reprogramming and using frequency medicine. True transformation comes from addressing not just the physical body, but also the energetic and subconscious layers that shape our reality.
If you’re ready to break free from unhelpful patterns and step into a more aligned, empowered version of yourself, I’d love to support you on this journey. Whether it’s through energetic healing, subconscious reprogramming, or personalized naturopathic guidance, you don’t have to navigate this alone!
